[Blog] A Little Coffee Roastery in a Trailer – Meet Kuroneko Coffee

So, thanks to a happy twist of fate, I ended up with a camping trailer.
Naturally, I thought, “Hey, why not turn this into a little coffee roastery?”
And that’s how Kuroneko Coffee Roastery came to life.

Just to clarify, we only roast coffee here — no café, no drinks or food served, no storefront.
At the moment, we’re online-only and do small-batch deliveries around Furano. (Sorry for the limited access!)

A Homemade Roasting Machine? Yep.

I’ve always loved coffee, and once I had the trailer, the idea of roasting my own beans really started brewing.
The catch?
No budget for a professional roaster. 😂

So… DIY to the rescue!

I gathered materials from the local DCM, Bestom, and Komeri(Local home improvement centers)
The only thing I bought online was a mesh basket from Amazon.
No blueprint, just some helpful YouTube tutorials and a lot of trial and error.
Surprisingly, it kinda worked out!

The Roast: Rich, Smoky, and Retro

As they say, seeing is believing. So here’s what the beans look like after roasting.

My setup uses direct flame, which gives the coffee a bold, smoky character.
That’s a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing.

If you enjoy that deep, nostalgic, Showa-style dark roast — think smoky and intense — then this might be right up your alley.
A few fans even buy regularly, which makes my heart full.

That said, if you prefer light roasts with a clean, fruity finish, mine might taste “too smoky” or “a bit burnt.”
(But hey, that’s the flavor profile I’m aiming for, so I’ll take that feedback as a win. 😄)

Future Ideas (Still Brewing…)

We do have an online shop, but unfortunately we don’t ship internationally.
If you’re living in Japan or staying long-term at a fixed address within the country, you’re more than welcome to order.
Feel free to check it out if you’re curious.

We’re a tiny, one-person micro roastery run more as a passion project than a full-time gig.My day job? I’m an acupuncturist. My real job? Just trying to enjoy life. I also dabble in the travel industry, so I guess you could say I’m a coffee nerd with a pretty unclear job title. ☕︎

All of our roasts are dark roast only — that’s just my personal taste and how the blends turned out. Sorry, light roast fans!

The flavor I aim for is kind of retro — think old-school Showa-era coffee. I use a handmade, direct-fire roasting machine and create my own original blends.

Now and then, I get my hands on small-lot green beans or try out new experimental blends, so you might see the occasional limited edition pop up.

No promises, but I’d love to do some fun stuff like:

  • Coffee roasting demos or tasting events
  • Coffee + outdoor activities like cycling or fishing

There’s just something magical about sipping coffee out in nature — it hits different.

P.S. I’m on Instagram Too

Updates are pretty random, but I share roasting scenes and coffee moments here:

Having home-roasted coffee in your life is a tiny luxury that makes every day feel special.
Hope you get to try it someday ☕️
